Adoption Listings
Many adoption agencies and centers post adoption listings on their Internet sites. These may include a picture of the child along with some pertinent statistics about them. Going through the listings is one way to find children you are interested in adopting.
More often, however, you may use the listings to get a better idea of the type of child you wish to adopt. Listings can only give so much information. The purpose of some of the listings is often to get adoptive parents interested in signing on to a particular agency.
Sometimes listings are done by area or state. These listings show local children who need to be adopted. This can be helpful when you want to adopt locally. Some groups combine listings of various agencies together. Still others may group listings by country of the available children. The listings make it easy to see what children are available for adoption in certain areas.
When you see a listing you are interested in you must act immediately. The best thing to do is to become listed with an agency. While they may be looking for a child to match you can also look amongst the listings. Many agencies work together to place children so if you see a listing on another agency site you can inquire about it at your agency.
Children who are listed in adoption listings are often quickly adopted. If you see a child that you are interested in you must act quickly. Be sure that you are ready for adoption. You should already have had a home study done so that you are qualified.
If the listings are on the Internet, however, you can be sure that many others are looking at them also. Don’t get discouraged if the child you are interested in is no longer available. Once you have an idea of what your want in your adoptive child you or your agency can make an easier match.
Take care not to let listings sway you into something you aren’t sure about. Sometimes the pictures and information can tug at your heartstrings and may make you consider an adoption you weren’t considering before. For instance, you may be set on having an infant but you see a listing for a 6 year old that catches your attention. Suddenly you are deciding to adopt this older child. Make sure that you do not compromise your desires.
There are also adoption listings of pregnant women who are planning on putting up their child for adoption when it is born. These should be checked out with an agency and a lawyer before making any financial or emotional commitments. An attorney who specializes in adoption can help to give you advice that will ensure a legal adoption takes place. While the fear is that the women may change her mind after delivering the baby, this actually occurs very rarely. Agencies often take special precautions to ensure that the baby and the birth mother do not bond. Protect yourself by having legally binding contracts drawn up ahead of time that will ensure that if the mother does change her mind you will be reimbursed for any expenses you incurred.
